Abstractthe courteous and modest words as one of the important means of Chineselanguage diction,always accompanied by a Chinese civilization,they sustainedand profound impact on the Chinese interpersonal relationships in the long processof history.The Mingging times is an important stages of the formation anddevelopment of Chinese vocabulary.The current paper mainly talks about thecourteous and modest words in San Xia Wu Yi which is one of the famouschivalrous detective novel in Ming and Qing Dynasties.Based on the exhaustivesearch of the cursing expressions in the novel,this article provides a systematicallylist and study of the courteous and modest words,what can help we have a betterunderstanding of the courteous and modest words which is a common linguisticphenomenon.This article will be divided into five chapters.The first chapter is preface,introducing the backgrounds of the study on this topic,proposing the methods andcontents of the research in the article.The second chapter discusses and identifiesthe principle of courteous and modest words.The third chapter explores and dividesthe type of the courteous and modest words in San Xia Wu Yi,including theappellition of courteous and modest words as well as the formulation of courteousand modest words.The appellition of courteous and modest words includeskinsfolk appellition of courteous and modest words,similar kinsfolk appellition ofcourteous and modest words,identity appellition of courteous and modest words,social appellition of courteous and modest words and referent courteous andmodest words.The formulation of courteous and modest words includes themopheme type of courteous and modest words and morphological courteous andmodest words.And we takes examples to analysis them.Chapter Four summarizesthe characteristics of the courteous and modest words and analysis the reasons.Thefifth chapter compares the modest words in San Xia Wu Yi with those in modernChinese,and finds that the modest words in the anthology of the novelists of SanXia Wu Yi have both reservation and decline.The final chapter,chapter fifth is a
