The preparation of nonwoven polypropylene fabricradiation-grafted with acrylic acid as weakly acidic cation exchangefiber and its applicationAbstractGraft polymerization of acrylic acid onto nonwoven polypropelene (PP)fabricwas carried out by two methods, which were preirradiation technique andsimultaneous irradiation technique, using a Co gamma radiation source.Ion exchange fabric was prepared by nonwoven PP fabric immersed into acrylicacid diluted with water and 0.2%inhibitor (Mohr's salt)at an inert atmosphere bysimultaneous irradiation technique. The influence factors on degree of grafting, suchas the total irradiation dose, monomer concentration and inorganic acid, werediscussed. The degree of grafting for acrylic acid onto PP fabric increased with theincrease of total irradiation dose and monomer concentration. And the addition of asmall amount of sulfuric acid to the reaction mixture resulted in a significantacceleration of the degree of graftingThe influence parameters on degree of grafting, such as the irradiation dose, thestorage time after preirradiation, monomer concentration and bath ratio, were studied. The results indicated that the degree of grafting increased with the increase ofmonomer concentration. The degree of grafting reached the maximum when the totalpreirradiation dose was 80 kGy,and the bath ratio was 1:200.The degree of graftingdecreased with the increasing of storage time after irradiation, and when the storagetime exceeded seven days, the degree of grafting tended to zero. The FT-IR and SEM of the grafted PP showed that carboxyl group wassuccessfully introduced onto nonwoven polypropelene fabric. The DSC and WAXDspetra indicated that the over-dosing of AA onto the backbones of PP tended toincrease the crystallite size. The water uptake was 324.49%when the degree ofgrafting was 162.25%.The ion exchange capacity was 3.7mmol/g.The absorptioncapacity with Cr(III)was 1.04mmol/g.
