AbstractThe ultimate goal of foreign language teaching is to cultivate and enhance student'scommunicative competence.Examining our teaching and learning reality in the light ofthis goal,we find that we still have a long way to go.As a matter of fact,there existssome problems in English language teaching in China,particularly in English grammarteaching,which is an integral part of English language teaching.Therefore,it is deemedquite necessary and very important to conduct research into and carry out reforms inEnglish grammar teaching.This paper is intended to explore how to teach English grammar effectively withcommunicative approach.First,communicative approach is discussed at length.Next,many aspects of grammar and grammar teaching are analyzed.The role,the purposeand the status of grammar teaching are expounded and its problems exposed before itsnecessity and importance are emphasized.Then,the relationship between grammarteaching and communicative approach was explained so as to suppose that it is anappropriate and effective method to teach English grammar by applying communicativeapproach.After that,a number of classroom communicative activities are presented todemonstrate how to teach English grammar by adopting communicative approach.Theconclusion arrived at is communicative approach can be effectively applied to Englishgrammar teaching,for it is proved to be capable of producing better results than by wayof the traditional method.Key Words:communicative competencecommunicative approachgrammar teachingforeign language teachinglinguistic competence
