毕业论文(设计)(1985:203)defines motivation to learn an L2 as "the extent to which the individualworks or strives to learn the language because of a desire to do so and the satisfactionexperienced in this activity."Motivation is commonly thought of as an inner drive,impulse,emotion,or desire that moves one to a particular action.In more technicalterms,motivation refers to "the choices people make as to what experiences or goalsthey will approach or avoid and the degree of effect they will exert in that respect"(See H.D.Brown,2002:152).The most extreme statement about the importance of motivation in languagelearning is probably Skehan's noted statement "given motivation,anyone can learn alanguage"(1989:49).This statement suggests that a motivated learner can overcomeany unfavorable condition in language learning.Motivation is an important part of affective attitude in learning process.The NewNational Standard of English Curriculum also points out that affective attitudes areimportant factors which influence students'learning and development.Therefore,in language teaching,teachers should pay more attention to students'motivation.But when the author worked as an intern teacher at Lanshan Junior HighSchool,she found that most students are of low motivation of English learning.What's more,the present situation of English learning of the students in rural areas isvery worrying.The pass rate of the English Tests for Senior School Entrance quotedfrom this school in 2005-2007 shows that though the pass rate of English wasincreasing year by year,it still far from the lowest standard of English that QualityEducation requires.So,it is necessary that some researches on variables that influence-2
